HISTORY OF WRITING & SURFACES PART III – Brush Lettering & the Invention of Paper

We will continue our exploration of the history of writing focusing on the invention of paper by the Chinese! We will tackle grinding our own Sumi ink and Asian brush painting. Making our own paper will be involved as well! Also, using a pointed or “round” brush, we will learn western style Brush Lettering and write on the paper we made. As usual, fun will be had and you will come away with beautiful, completed pieces.

Materials Needed:  typical Calligraphy supplies, Round Brushes, Shikishi boards – long and square, instructor will discuss other supplies as needed

HANDMADE BOOK – with Coptic Binding

Learn how to bind books using a Coptic stitch! This form of sewn bookbinding has an exposed spine that is able to open completely, creating a “lay-flat” book. We will complete one book with sketch paper and instructions for making more.

ALL LEVELS but some experience preferred

Some Materials Provided: text weight paper, book-board, thread, bone folder, various tools

Materials Needed: Small Nori Paste (PVA or Yes! Paste work), glue brush, decorative cover paper, scissors, craft knife and sharp blades, cutting mat, pencil, ruler, binder clips (½”+) Optional: bone folder, friction divider, curved sewing needle, old phonebook or magazine, beads

It is opaque, lustrous and vibrant, and it dries water-resistant! Casein can be used along with watercolor, acrylic and gouache. We’ll be using a kind of double analogous palette of color to explore the possibilities of this ancient painting medium using today’s materials and subject matter. If you are ready to up your painting game, this is the class for you!

PAINTING ON YUPO

No, it’s not “paper”!

Yupo is tree-free, bright white and stainproof, allowing the artist to create shapes and patterns impossible on paper. Learn some techniques and tricks for painting on this unusual substrate. Yupo resists buckling and gives you brilliant clear colors. We will talk about color and composition, experimenting with some different inks and paints to see what polypropylene can do!
